Ok, let’s talk meat. We use Jimmy Dean regular breakfast sausage. It says gluten free on it and we honestly like the taste. It goes in most of our egg scrambles. Anyways, back to the dirty rice!
There really isn’t a whole lot that needs to be said except maybe, we really like leftovers. With a family of 5 cooking in bulk is best. That’s why all of our recipes make so much food.
So let’s get cooking!
This recipe will need about 20-30 minutes for prepping.
- We start by browning our meat in a large nonstick pan.
Make sure you’re breaking it down into small pieces.
- Once it has cooked all the way through, you will remove it from the pan and drain.
- In the same pan, sauté those bell peppers, celery, onions, and garlic… or the frozen trinity mix (celery, onions, and bell peppers). It’s really up to you.
- Once the onions are translucent you’ll add your salt, pepper, and gluten free Cajun mix. We use Slap Ya Mama Cajun seasoning. You get get it here with my Amazon associates link https://amzn.to/3XcQcp8
- Now it’s time to add in your uncooked rice, broth, and thyme. Mix well and return the meat back into the pan.
- Bring to a boil, cover with a lid, and reduce heat to medium low. Simmer for 20 minutes until all liquid has evaporated and your rice is cooked.
- Uncover, fluff your rice and voilà! It’s time to eat!!!
I hope you enjoy this recipe!
Please let me know in the comments how your family likes it or what you did with it to make it your own!
Prep Time
20-30 minutes
Cook Time
20 minutes
Serves
1 hour
Ingredients
- 32 oz breakfast sausage
- 3 cups frozen seasoning blend or onions, green peppers, celery, and garlic
- 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning (we use Slap Ya Mama)
- 3 cups uncooked long grain white rice
- 6 cups low-sodium chicken broth
- 2 teaspoons dried thyme
- salt and peper to taste
Steps
1
In a large nonstick pan cook your meat. Make sure you’re separating and breaking it down. Cook until no longer pink, drain and set aside.
2
In the same pan sauté your seasoning blend. If you are not using the frozen mix, I would recommend putting the garlic in once your onions are translucent.
3
When the onions are translucent add in your cajun spice, salt, and pepper. You can cook this a little longer, maybe about a minute.
4
Stir in the rice, broth, and thyme. After it’s mixed add the meat back into the pan.
5
Bring to a boil, cover with lid, and reduce the heat to medium low for 20 minutes.
That’s all folks!
I hope you enjoy this recipe and please keep me posted on how your family likes it! It’s always nice to get feedback. I love interacting with people. This is especially true when it comes to type 1 diabetes or gluten free diets.
